GLOBAL SALT OPERATIONS

Since 2005 Landing Studio has documented industrial salt operations and landscapes around the world.

Salt is a relatively ubiquitous material in world geography, occurring in different form across nearly every climate. However, the material is highly metamorphic and exposure to moisture in the air will keep it in a constant state of change. Across diverse landscapes, the changing nature of the material has resulted in equivalently variable harvesting methods. These different 'farming' techniques have propagated regional distinctions in social and cultural structures surrounding the industry. While many industrial processes of material harvesting or production have become globally standardized; the salt's varied natures have caused the salt industries to remain closely related to regional landscape ecologies.
